From #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Jackson comes a pulse-pounding novel featuring two of her most acclaimed characters, New Orleans detectives Rick Bentz and Reuben Montoya—as a series of ritual slayings draw a psychology student back to a decaying asylum . . .

Eve Renner loved Cole Dennis—until the moment he tried to kill her. That was three months ago, when Eve was lured to a cabin where she found an old friend brutally murdered. Eve is almost positive it was Cole's face she saw right before she was shot. But her memories were too shaky to stand up to trial. Cole is a free man again. And a new string of killings has begun.

The murders all link back to Our Lady of Virtues, the asylum where Eve's father worked as a doctor. She wandered those hallways as a child, exploring hidden rooms and chambers, too young to understand what was happening there. Now, with every victim found, each body tattooed with a number, the pieces of a deadly puzzle fall into place—and all point back to Eve and the ruins of the once-grand hospital.

Detective Reuben Montoya and his partner, Rick Bentz, once convinced of Cole's guilt, now suspect a deeper evil at work. Eve knows she has little choice but to return to Our Lady of Virtues—and to trust Cole in her search for answers. But as Eve's memories gradually return, they only lead her closer to danger, toward the final, meticulously planned act of a killer obsessed with vengeance—and with her.

In bestseller Jackson's spine-tingling romantic thriller, the turbo-charged follow-up to Shiver
(2006), photographer Abby Chastain, who played a major role in Shiver
, finds she may have a half-sister in Eve Renner, the adopted daughter of Dr. Terrence Renner, former head psychiatrist at Our Lady of Virtues Mental Hospital, a shuttered asylum near (pre-Katrina) New Orleans. When "the Reviver," a tattoo-loving psychopath intent on revenge, almost kills Eve, the amnesia-plagued Eve fears Cole Dennis, her lawyer boyfriend, might be the monster, since she saw him at the scene of her assault (and a friend's murder), though Cole is released for lack of evidence. The body count mounts through many unexpected twists and turns as a grim Det. Reuben Montoya, Abby's fiancé, and his partner, Rick Bentz, try to puzzle out the killer's cryptic clues before he strikes again. A heart-stopping resolution suggests another heavy-breathing update might be in the works.

Eve Renner has been recovering from gunshot wounds after having being lured to the crime scene where a good friend was killed. Shes lost part of her memory of that night, so she cant be sure that her boyfriend was the one who shot her. On the very day she moves back into her house, he is released from jail. Eve hopes not to see Cole at all, but he is lured to Eves fathers house and arrives at another crime scene. Everything is the same as the first: throats are slit, messages are written in blood, and the victims have been tattooed. Madness and evil are at play as Eves past and present coalesce, and the asylum where her father worked and Eve played as a child emerges as a key to the mystery.
