A Promise Can Be a Terrible Thing

All heiress Sophia Hart's father wanted was for her to marry a gentleman with a title. She promised him on his deathbed she would do just that. But the only man Sophia wants to spend time with is Matson Brentwood, who makes up for the lack of a title by being dashing and decidedly dangerous. Since Matson crashed his way into her life and her heart, that vow to her father has become an awful burden.

Matson Brentwood is ready for the London gossipmongers to find something new and stop speculating about the fact that he and his twin brother strongly resemble Sir Randolph Gibson—who is not their mother’s husband. To make matters worse, he also has a bad case of infatuation with Sir Randolph’s ward, Miss Sophia Hart. Despite knowing that she’s out to snag a title to match her fortune, Matson is drawn to Sophia’s beauty, humor, and practical manner. Sophia is determined to fulfill her father’s dying wishes no matter what, driven by a somewhat childish need to make up for past wrongs. In this humorous conclusion to the Rogues’ Dynasty series of Regency romances (after A Gentleman Says “I Do”), Sophia plays a dangerous game, urging Matson to seduce her while looking elsewhere for marriage. Sophia’s two aunts, Mae and June, and Sir Randolph himself are delightful, and series fans will cheer Matson and Sophia to their happy ending.

As far as Sophia Hart is concerned, a promise is a promise. Sophia promised her father on his deathbed that she would marry a nobleman, and that is exactly what Sophia intends on doing until she bumps into Matson Brentwood. While Sophia has more than her share of suitable beaus, none of them has captured her heart quite like the totally unsuitable Matson. The most infamous rogue in society, Matson doesn't have a title or even the hope of inheriting one. Even worse, Matson and his family have been engaged in a long-running feud with Sophia's guardian, Sir Randolph Gibson. Sophia desperately wants to honor her promise to her father but doing so means giving up her one chance at true happiness. Readers who have faithfully followed Grey's sensually charged Rogue's Dynasty series (A Duke to Die For, 2009; An Earl to Enchant, 2010; A Gentleman Never Tells, 2011) will be quite pleased with the emotionally satisfying conclusion.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2013, American Library Association.)
